JunWe are in the first month of the year, and at the same time, we are in the season of Harmattan. Fishes are poikilothermic (cold blooded) animals. They are just like most aquatic animals and reptiles (e.g. snakes and lizards). what being cold means is, the body temperature of the fish is influenced by the external temperature i.e whenever the temperature is cold, they become cold and whenever the temperature is warm, they become warm. So in essence, what I am trying to say is fishes are not friendly to the cold weather.
What happens to fish when the temperature is below the required temperature in the water?
1. At temperature between 15°C - 24°C, their feed consumption reduces. If they consume a bag within a week during normal weather, then during the harmattan season, a bag will take them 2-3 weeks.
2. At temperatures below 15°C, death occurs most especially in juvenile fish.
3. The fish become easily susceptible to diseases.
4. Their growth rate reduces had as such, the period they will attain table size is prolonged.
How do I manage my fish during this cold weather? I personally advice prospective fish farmers not to stock fish during late December to mid February. The reason is, the fish do not have the ability to withstand the cold weather. They easily come down with diseases which if not properly managed, will lead to colossal loss to the farmer. The following can be done to by the farmer to ameliorate the effect of the cold weather on the fish. 1. Delay feeding of fish till 11:00am or when the weather is a bit warm. 2. Change the water in the pond: Fresh water coming directly from the borehole is a warmer than the one in the pond. 3. Use water heater: Water heaters are not the normal heaters we use in boiling water at home, they are specifically meant for fish. They have a thermostat that helps in regulating the temperature so that it should neither go above average, nor go below it.
